Chapter Ten: Rock-a-Bye Mandy

“Hello, Mandy.”

Nanny Prim walked into Ethan Sharpe’s private bedroom, where Mandy was sitting reading a storybook. When she looked up at the nanny, her first impulse was to give her the cold shoulder, but one of the side effects of becoming a Little was that she openly showed her emotion, no matter what they were. Now she was on her feet, running towards Nanny Prim and wrapping her arms around the taller woman’s waist.

“I missed you!” she cried, pressing her face into Nanny’s chest.

Nanny Prim sighed and stroked Mandy’s blonde curls. “I’ve missed you, too,” she said. She took Mandy’s hand. “So, have you been good for Papa while I was out tending to Elise?”

Nanny Prim did not let on that she already knew the truth, that Mandy had thrown what – for her – had amounted to a spectacular tantrum, and that the tantrum had led to her being severely punished and banished for the night from her Papa’s bed. Now she’d been returned to Ethan’s quarters, although he was out at the moment. One of the other nannies had dressed Mandy; Nanny Prim frowned at the choice of a dress. It was far to heavy a fabric for the forecasted temperature.

“Well?” Nanny Prim asked when Mandy just looked down in silence.

“I was not good, Nanny. Not good at all.” Nanny had moved to a chair, and Mandy crawled into her lap and nestled her head on the broad shoulder. For a few long moments, Nanny Prim rocked Mandy, knowing a maternal touch might make it easier for her to talk.

“If I tell you the truth, do you promise not to be mad?” Mandy’s voice was small, and Nanny Prim flashed back to the first time she’d seen the young woman. Mandy had been Amanda Wingate then, a guarded, defensive prisoner who’d cursed at her. At that time, Nanny – known then to Mandy as just Viola Prim – had known just how much pressure to apply to gain the girl’s compliance. But that was what she was good at – reading people – and knowing when to be strict and when to be soft. Now she was in full mothering mode as she smoothed Mandy’s hair.

“Mandy, I’ll never be mad at you for being honest.”

Mandy snuggled in closer as she began to speak. “I was so mad when Papa told me that you weren’t coming back last night. And then…and then he told me that I would have to share you with…with…her.”

“With Elise,” Nanny Prim said. “It won’t hurt you to say her name.”

“I don’t want to say her name. I hate her.”

Nanny Prim sighed. “Well, you probably have every right to.”

“Really?” Mandy sat up.

“Yes. She was very mean to you, Mandy. She tried to lead your Papa astray. She also tried to destroy your confidence.” Nanny sat back and moved a strand of hair away from Mandy’s face. “But think back, Mandy, on some of the decisions you made in your old life. Think back to when you trusted the awful man who betrayed you.
